February Market

Another Tarporley Market, another cold day. but the sun came out as did the general public – in their droves! The Country Market does seem to create a real buzz in the village and everyone was in high spirits.
That's 3 markets all on sub zero days.

For the traders it was a super day. As usual Simply Pies sold out first, all bar one quiche, which Sarah left for me to sell. All alone it was still unsold half an hour later. She was not impressed.

All that was left of the hog roast were a few bones, Goat meat sold out early, leaving people complaining that they would have to make do with lamb (which also sold out). That alone made a goat farmers day.

I was delighted by the return of Pimblott’s Poultry and by the splash of colour created by John Spencer from John James Planters whose trays of winter-flowering plants tempted a lot of people as he’d practically sold out by the end of the day.

New this month was Kerry, The Ostrich lady and Richard from Chirk Trout Farm. Vale Royal were giving away really good bags and Mr Bournes cheese was, as usual, simply the best

Tarporley Country Market is not resting on its laurels however and plans are afoot to create some one-off events over the coming year. The first one is planned for May with cookery demonstrations from our local hostelries and hosted by Masterchef of Great Britain, Brian Mellor.

May of course is also well into the Asparagus Season and local producer Richard Wilding from Cherry Orchard Farm has already booked a stall at the market. We’ll keep you posted

GET FRESH IN TARPORLEY!

Saturday 7^th February sees the third Tarporley Country Market with some great new local producers joining in.

Fresh on the scene are Chirk Trout Farm with their home-smoked meats, fish and soups; also Family Jam Production from Manley with their sumptuous range of jams and curds. Making a very welcome return is Mary Walton of Mary’s Homemade Cakes: Mary is renowned for using locally milled flour, local butter and of course free range eggs in all her cakes, puddings and scones.

Talking of eggs, Pimblott’s Poultry will be there too with a range of live poultry, feed, grit etc., not to mention a wide range of their home-grown seasonal vegetables – remember their carrots will have been picked and washed the day before the Market and are guaranteed to last 2 weeks.

Now no Country Market would be complete without meat and what a fantastic selection we have at Tarporley. This is real meat, where beef, home bred of course, is hung for a minimum of 21 days allowing it to relax and provide the consumer with the melt-in-the-mouth flavour we remember from yesteryear. Jim Stratton from Stockton and Stratton who farm at Bruera is one of two producers attending the market with homebred beef and pork. The second producer selling homebred beef is the Burton Traditional Meat Company, based at Burton, Tarporley. Burton’s breed Herefords and a tastier more tender steak would be hard to find!

Anyone in need of a shopping bag to take all their goodies home need look no further than the Vale Royal Borough Council stand who are giving away SMYLE bags to the first 200 people to complete an EnergyB questionnaire on the day.

There’s plenty of free parking in Tarporley too, not only behind the Rising Sun, the British Legion and the Community Centre, but also behind The Crown Hotel by kind permission of the landlords, Pat and Carl.

So that’s free parking, fresh local food and a very warm welcome in Tarporley on Saturday 7^th February

January Market hits -9 degrees

Well despite a temperature of -9 - yes that's minus 9 degrees we all had fun at the market. Cooking bacon was the best job, as at least it kept us warm
Simply Pies sold out as did Jim Stratton from Stockton and Stratton who breed their own home-bred beef and pork just outside Bruera. Jim says he seems to be developing a growing number of customers from Tarporley, as indeed is Chestnut Meats who produce delicious bacon and goat at Spurstow.

Pimlotts Poultry will return in February with hens for sale (Hens bought by market guru, Karen at the first market are now in production and she's thrilled to bits!!) Plus Spring bulbs and planters for sale, jams, chutneys, yoghurts, cheeses, pies, fresh vegetables - literally dug out of the ground the day before, fresh and smoked meats etc etc. Oh, and puddings!!

The next market is the weekend before valentines day and so there will be a few giftware stalls - all locally produced of course. The next market is Saturday 7th February 10am to 2pm We even plan to have a busker to entertain the market!

The market committee are going to be bringing out a Directory of Producers, free of charge, to be given out at different markets. In it will be a list of the events we will be running (cookery demos, Tarporley Tea, Harvest Festival, Cheese Festival etc) together with a page per producer so that they have an opportunity to tell the public what they produce, where and why and include photos and logos.

December Market

December 2008 saw the picturesque Cheshire village of Tarporley host it's first Farmers Market. Visitors to the village, and locals alike enjoyed the fun atmosphere as two dozen stalls sold fresh farm produce on a cold and crisp December morning.

24 trade stands ranging from local meats, cheeses and cakes to a chainsaw woodcarver and live hens provided shoppers with a real spectacle of local food, gifts – and fun.

Locals flooded into the market in their thousands ensuring many stallholders sold out. Sarah from Whitchurch-based “Simply Pies” sent home for more pies but sold out of those too.

Established businesses in Tarporley were delighted by the success of the event and felt it added a new trading dimension to the village.

The markets will be held monthly on the first Saturday of the month in 2 locations in the village: Church Lane and Chestnut Terrace.
